10,000 Brazilian homeless protest World Cup

Outside the World Cup stadium in Sao Paulo, 10,000 homeless Brazilians took to the streets to protest against the high cost of the World Cup. Demonstrators demanded that the government instead dedicate more public money to improved housing, healthcare and education, as well as subsidised transport.

Brazil currently has a housing deficit of 8 million with 12 million citizens living in favelas. One of the ways the government is trying to address this is through the Minha Casa, Minha Vida (My House, My Life)programme which aims to construct three million homes. Most developers under the programme receive funds from government loans, which is a painstakingly slow and unreliable process. However, one developer, EcoHouse Group chooses to seek out overseas investors for funding.

With offices in the UK, Singapore, Brazil, Malaysia, China and Canada, EcoHouse Group has sold almost 2000 units across nine projects in the North Eastern city of Natal. Following on from this, the company is now constructing a new project in Brazil’s southernmost state capital, Porto Alegre. Investors can find out more about EcoHouse Group’s latest new projects, Monte Alegre, by clicking here http://www.montealegrebrazil.com/

Ultimately, Brazil’s housing crisis will take decades to solve, however with Minha Casa, Minha Vida and developers like EcoHouse Group the first steps are being taken and hopefully those protesting at the moment will soon see the benefits.
