At an inaugural ceremony for new housing units, President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil once more defended her government’s financial support for the MCMV programme. To give it its full name, ‘Minha Casa, Minha Vida’ (‘My House, My Life’) has been the successful public-private joint initiative to provide affordable new homes for sale to people on only modest incomes.
In fact, there is an upper income limit for buyers to be eligible as well as (in effect) a lower one. Ecohouse has been heavily involved in the process in Brazil since the early days, a fact of which the whole organisation is extremely proud.
In her speech, the President reminded listeners how gratified she was at the scheme and its benefit to a growing number of ordinary citizens needing decent homes. However she also remarked on the knock-on great effect of providing extra employment in the building and associated industries.
