The Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo has been eagerly awaited by supporters at home and abroad alike. On 12th June it will host the opening World Cup match between Brazil and Croatia, followed a week later by England’s crucial match against Uruguay. The stadium will then host four more matches including the semi-final.
However first there was the small matter of giving the local team, Corinthians, the chance to enjoy their new home. After waiting decades for their own stadium, more than 36,000 fans flocked to the eastern district of Itaquera to see their team play at the arena for the first time. However their opponents, bottom of the league Figueirense, played the role of party poopers perfectly as they frustrated Corinthians and recorded a 1-0 win to send the locals home disappointed.
Brazilians everywhere will now be hoping that when the World Cup kicks off in just over three weeks’ time, the national team will enjoy slightly better luck than Corinthians in their first match at the stadium!
